Jessie Alum Josie Totah Clarifies PDA-Filled TikTok with Costar Karan Brar Was a 'Joke,' Confirms They're Not Dating.
Former Jessie stars Josie Totah and Karan Brar caused a stir online with a TikTok video featuring them sharing a kiss, but Totah has since clarified the situation.
Despite speculation, Totah, 23, and Brar, 25, are not dating. The pair, who starred alongside Debby Ryan in the Disney Channel hit from 2011 to 2015, recently made headlines after posting a TikTok showing Brar embracing Totah from behind before she leaned in for a kiss.
As the video went viral, Totah followed up with another TikTok, laughing and repeatedly stating, "It was a joke." She further explained in the caption, "We are two platonic best friends who danced a little too close to the sun."
Brar also addressed the buzz on his Instagram Stories, echoing Totah's sentiment with, "It was a joke 😭," and assuring fans that they didn’t intend to "gaslight" the internet.
Reactions from fans were mixed, with some questioning the authenticity of the joke. One commenter wrote, "That did not look like a joke," while another lamented, "Well you can't be joking like that cause now I'm disappointed."
Totah joined Jessie in 2013 as Stuart Wooten, a character with a crush on Skai Jackson's Zuri. Brar played Ravi, one of the Ross siblings cared for by babysitter Jessie, portrayed by Debby Ryan. Peyton List and Cameron Boyce rounded out the Ross family.
In 2018, Totah publicly came out as a transgender woman through a personal essay for Time, sharing her journey and reflecting on the assumptions made about her identity during her childhood.
"I was afraid I wouldn’t be accepted," Totah wrote. "But I realized that hiding my true self is not healthy. I’m ready to be free."
She affirmed, "My pronouns are she, her, and hers. I identify as female, specifically as a transgender female. And my name is Josie Totah."
