Understanding Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is a 15-day festival that begins on the first new moon of the lunar calendar. In 2025, it starts on Wednesday, Jan. 29, and concludes with the Lantern Festival on Feb. 12. Unlike the Western Gregorian calendar, the lunar calendar follows the moon’s 12 phases, making a full year approximately 354 days long. As a result, Lunar New Year typically falls between late January and early February.
