Spirit Airlines has introduced a stricter dress code for passengers |
Spirit Airlines has introduced a stricter dress code for passengers, effective January 22, which could result in denial of boarding or removal from flights for violations.
According to the updated policy, passengers may be barred from flying if they wear inappropriate or revealing clothing, such as see-through garments that expose private areas like breasts or buttocks. Additionally, passengers must wear footwear, aligning with standard airline policies. The new rules also address offensive tattoos, which is a less common reason for removal.
This policy change follows recent incidents involving dress code disputes. In October, two women were removed from a Spirit flight for wearing crop tops. At the time, the airline explained, "Our Contract of Carriage, a document all Guests agree to upon making a reservation with us, includes certain clothing standards for all Guests traveling with us." More recently, a Texas man was escorted off a plane for wearing a hoodie deemed offensive, despite complying with requests to remove it.
Spirit Airlines has updated its contract of carriage to outline specific clothing and body art guidelines for passengers. As of January 22, 2025, the policy states:
"A guest shall not be permitted to board the aircraft or may be required to leave an aircraft if that guest ... is barefoot or inadequately clothed (i.e., see-through clothing; not adequately covered; exposed breasts, buttocks, or other private parts), or whose clothing or article, including body art, is lewd, obscene, or offensive in nature."
While the previous contract allowed for passengers to be denied boarding if they were barefoot, inadequately clothed, or wearing offensive clothing, the updated version provides more specific examples and includes guidelines regarding body art.
