Trump hints at rejoining World Health Organization

President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that he may consider rejoining the World Health Organization (WHO), just days after ordering the United States to exit the global health agency. He criticized the organization’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other international health crises, according to Reuters.

“Maybe we would consider doing it again. I don’t know. Maybe we would. They would have to clean it up,” Trump remarked during a rally in Las Vegas.

The U.S. is currently set to leave the WHO on January 22, 2026. Trump announced the decision earlier this week after being sworn in for his second term as President.

As the largest financial contributor to the WHO, the U.S. provides approximately 18% of the organization’s overall funding. The WHO’s budget for 2024-2025 stands at $6.8 billion, according to a source.

During his rally, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the U.S. paying significantly more to the WHO than China, despite its larger population.

This is not the first time Trump has pursued withdrawal from the WHO. He initiated the process during his first term in 2020. However, his plan was halted when Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election and reversed the decision on his first day in office, January 20, 2021.
