Monkey Triggers Nationwide Blackout in Sri Lanka

A monkey infiltrating a Sri Lankan electrical substation caused a widespread power outage across the entire island on Sunday (Feb 9), according to government officials.

The blackout began at approximately 11:30 a.m. local time (2 p.m. Singapore time).

"A monkey has come in contact with our grid transformer, causing an imbalance in the system," Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody informed reporters.

The incident occurred in a southern suburb of Colombo, he added.

By around 6 p.m. local time, electricity was fully restored nationwide, as reported by Sri Lankan news outlet Daily Mirror. Earlier, the outage also disrupted water supplies.

In 2022, Sri Lankans faced months of severe power shortages due to an economic crisis. With fuel stations running out of petrol and diesel, thermal power plants were forced to impose electricity rationing for up to 13 hours daily.
