The Fantastic Four: First Steps is set to hit theaters on July 25 |
On Tuesday, February 4, Marvel Studios unveiled an exciting first look at The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The teaser introduces Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing.
The official preview offers a glimpse of the team sharing a Sunday dinner, reminiscing about their journey before gaining their extraordinary abilities. At one point, Reed recalls their past, setting the stage for the dynamic they now share.
"Whatever life throws on us, we'll face it together. As a family," Sue affirms, emphasizing their unbreakable bond.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had previously hinted at the film’s direction during San Diego Comic-Con in 2022. Unlike past adaptations, this movie will not focus on the Fantastic Four’s origin story.
“A lot of people know this origin story. A lot of people know the basics. How do we take that and bring something that they’ve never seen before?” Feige explained at the time. “We’ve set a very high bar for ourselves [by] bringing that to the screen.”
A key difference this time around is the film’s unique setting—embracing a 1960s-inspired aesthetic rather than a modern-day backdrop. Director Matt Shakman elaborated on the stylistic approach, noting that the film will feature a retro-futuristic take on the era.
"We're not just doing the '60s, we're doing retro-future '60s," he revealed. "It's part what you know from the '60s, but part what you’ve never seen before."
Feige, 51, shared additional insight during The Official Marvel Podcast, confirming that the movie will be a period piece set in New York City—possibly within an alternate universe.
Referencing promotional artwork featuring Johnny Storm in mid-air forming a "4" symbol, Feige pointed out an intriguing clue. “There was another piece of art we released with Johnny Storm flying in the air making a '4' symbol, and there was a cityscape in the corner of that image.”
He continued, “There were a lot of smart people who noticed that that cityscape didn’t look exactly like the New York that we know, or the New York that existed in the ‘60s in our world. Those are smart observations, I’ll say.”
