Lady Gaga’s Mayhem: A Fearless Leap into Musical Chaos

Pop Superstar’s Seventh Studio Album Showcases Collaborations with Gesaffelstein and Bruno Mars

Lady Gaga has officially unveiled her much-anticipated seventh album, Mayhem, marking another bold chapter in her illustrious career. This latest project follows 2020’s Chromatica and her 2023 contribution to Joker 2, Harlequin.

With production overseen by Gaga, her fiancé Michael Polansky, and industry heavyweight Andrew Watt, the album’s rollout began last fall. The first taste of Mayhem came with “Die With a Smile”, a striking collaboration with Bruno Mars, followed by the electrifying electro-pop singles “Disease” and “Abracadabra”. Alongside Mars, the album’s standout feature comes from Gesaffelstein, the celebrated French DJ known for his work with The Weeknd. Cirkut also played a major role in shaping the album’s sound, working closely with Watt and Gaga.

The album took shape at Rick Rubin’s legendary Shangri-La Studios, where Gaga reflected on its deeply personal nature. “The album started as me conquering a fear: to return to the pop music my earliest fans loved. This record allowed me to reclaim a huge part of myself. It’s about enjoying everything I am and sharing that joy with my fans.”

Many have drawn parallels between Mayhem and Gaga’s earlier masterpieces, The Fame Monster and Born This Way, both known for their darker themes and imagery. “I wanted to traverse old ground while breaking new ground, which I think is hard to do,” Gaga explained. “There are a few moments on the album where some people might say, ‘Oh, that reminds me of this,’ because I do have a style, but I made an effort musically to push myself to a new place.”

This weekend, Gaga will take on double duty as both host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live. While a full tour remains unconfirmed, she has already booked performances in Mexico and Brazil, along with a headlining slot at Coachella in April.

A Deep Dive into Every Mayhem Track

From haunting ballads to electrifying dancefloor anthems, Gaga’s latest release proves she’s still evolving. Below, we take a track-by-track look at the Mayhem experience:

“How Bad Do U Want Me”

While “How Bad Do U Want Me” leans into power-pop sensibilities, it doesn’t quite land as a defining moment. The track's nostalgic ‘80s synth-pop aesthetic and rebellious storyline—centering around a “bad girl” being pursued by a “good guy"—make for a catchy listen, but its overall execution feels somewhat out of place in the larger context of Mayhem. While the song serves as a brief sonic reset, it ultimately struggles to match the album’s bolder, more adventurous moments.

“Don’t Call Tonight”

Unlike its predecessor, “Don’t Call Tonight” injects a bit more vitality into the mix, thanks to its funk-laced groove and talkbox-infused bridge. While the track doesn’t fully embrace the audacity expected from Gaga, it manages to evoke echoes of The Fame Monster classic “Alejandro”—though it never quite reaches the same heights. Still, by the song’s climax, Gaga finds her footing, delivering a satisfying finish as she sings, “your heart beats fast ’cause you’re in the zone/ And then you hear the phone.”

“The Beast”

A delightful oddity, “The Beast” embraces a cinematic, horror-inspired theme. In this pseudo-ballad, Gaga croons to her lover—who, in this eerie scenario, happens to be a werewolf. Her vocal performance oozes with anticipation, leaving listeners to wonder who the real beast in the story truly is. The song’s dramatic composition eventually gives way to an over-the-top guitar solo, adding an edgy twist to an already fascinating track.

“Die With a Smile” (feat. Bruno Mars)

It’s undeniable: “Die With a Smile” is a beautifully crafted song. Gaga’s commanding, soulful vocals intertwine seamlessly with Bruno Mars’ signature high-energy delivery, culminating in a soaring declaration of love. However, within the broader Mayhem landscape, this track feels more like an epilogue than a central piece of the puzzle. While it provides a soothing contrast to the album’s wilder moments, one can’t help but question whether Mayhem truly needed such a gentle conclusion.

“LoveDrug”

Gaga’s foray into arena rock reaches exhilarating heights with “LoveDrug”. Channeling the spirit of bands like Boston and Foreigner, the song acts as a pivotal transition between Mayhem’s dark, twisted first half and its more emotionally driven second half. Gaga’s powerhouse vocals elevate the song’s anthemic chorus: “I just need a dose of the right stuff/ I just need a hit of your love drug.”

“Disease”

Initially a divisive track among fans, “Disease” has proven to be a grower. The album opener bombards listeners with blaring synths and glitchy electronic flourishes, setting the tone for the sonic chaos ahead. While its abrasive nature may have surprised some, repeated listens reveal the song’s brilliance—Gaga’s vocals howl with urgency as she delivers a deliriously infectious pop banger.

“Blade of Grass”

Though “Die With a Smile” may be the album’s official love ballad, it’s “Blade of Grass” that truly shines. A tender tribute to Gaga’s fiancé, Michael Polansky, the song earns its place among the artist’s most poignant compositions. With raw emotion, Gaga belts, “Even though the church burned down, I’ll be your queen without a crown.”

“Killah” (feat. Gesaffelstein)

On “Killah”, Gaga embraces her most audacious persona yet. This genre-blurring track merges funk rock with dark techno, exuding a hypnotic, sensual energy. With staccato vocals and commanding delivery, Gaga fully immerses herself in this sonic seduction. Just when the song reaches its peak, Gesaffelstein’s electronic wizardry sends it spiraling into an otherworldly dimension.

“Vanish Into You”

Arguably one of Gaga’s most vocally impressive performances, “Vanish Into You” takes cues from glam rock legends like David Bowie. The track’s energetic rhythm and sweeping harmonies bring Mayhem to a dazzling climax, with Gaga flexing every inch of her vocal range.

“Shadow of a Man”

Addressing the long-standing gender disparities within the music industry, “Shadow of a Man” sees Gaga calling out the double standards that have plagued her career. Over shimmering synths and disco-infused guitars, she defiantly proclaims, “Watch me, I swear I’ll dance in the shadow of a man.”

“Abracadabra”

A masterclass in controlled chaos, “Abracadabra” brings together elements from Bad Romance, Artpop, and Born This Way while still standing as its own unique beast. The track is unpredictable in structure, bouncing between pre-choruses, bridges, and outros in a relentless sonic whirlwind.

“Zombieboy”

Injecting some much-needed levity into Mayhem, “Zombieboy” delivers a delightfully campy disco number. The playful instrumentation, complete with groovy guitars and clapping percussion, makes this track an instant mood-booster.

“Garden of Eden”

Merging gothic pop, club beats, and pulsating electronica, “Garden of Eden” stands as one of Mayhem’s most eclectic moments. As Gaga leads listeners into a reckless, euphoric dancefloor experience, she guarantees, “I’ll t-t-take you to the Garden of Eden.”

“Perfect Celebrity”

Closing the album on a blistering note, “Perfect Celebrity” revisits the themes of fame and self-destruction first explored in “Paparazzi”. Infused with a venomous electro-grunge edge, Gaga’s biting commentary on stardom cements Mayhem as one of her most daring records to date.
