  • President Donald Trump, during his address to Congress, reaffirmed that the United States intends to take control of Greenland “one way or the other.”
  • “We need Greenland for national security and even international security, and we’re working with everybody involved to try and get it,” Trump declared.
  • Danish authorities have consistently dismissed Trump’s previous attempts to negotiate the acquisition of the self-governing territory.

On Tuesday, Trump intensified his stance, emphasizing that the United States would move forward with securing Greenland “one way or the other.” His remarks mark an escalation in the rhetoric surrounding the Arctic island, which has been a subject of U.S. interest for months.

Speaking before Congress in Washington, Trump addressed Greenlanders directly, stating, “I have a message tonight for the incredible people of Greenland.”

“We strongly support your right to determine your own future, and if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America,” he announced midway through his lengthy speech.

Trump further assured Greenland’s residents that the U.S. would “keep you safe, we will make you rich, and together, we will take Greenland to heights like you have never thought possible before.”

Despite these assurances, his tone shifted as he reinforced to Americans why Greenland is of critical importance to U.S. security interests.

“We need Greenland for national security and even international security, and we’re working with everybody involved to try and get it,” Trump reiterated.

“But we need it really for international, for world security, and I think we’re going to get it. One way or the other, we’re going to get it,” he continued.

“It’s a very small population, but a very, very large piece of land. And very, very important for military security,” Trump concluded before moving on to another topic.

The remarks, which seemed both an appeal and a warning, caught many by surprise but aligned with Trump’s longstanding interest in Greenland.

For years, Trump has fixated on the strategic significance of the Arctic territory and has repeatedly proposed U.S. acquisition of the land.

In January, Donald Trump Jr. made a widely publicized trip to Greenland’s capital, where he recorded video content for a podcast.

Although the visit was officially classified as personal, Trump’s social media activity surrounding the trip carried a strong political tone.

“Don Jr. and my Reps landing in Greenland,” Trump posted regarding his son’s arrival in Nuuk.

“The reception has been great. They, and the Free World, need safety, security, strength, and PEACE! This is a deal that must happen. MAGA. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!” he added.

Denmark has repeatedly rebuffed Trump’s ambitions regarding the island, with resistance dating back to at least 2019.

However, Trump’s push for Greenland is not merely personal—it aligns with a broader national security strategy aimed at countering both Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic region.
