UK Investigates TikTok and Reddit Over Children's Data Protection Measures

The United Kingdom's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has initiated an inquiry into the privacy practices of TikTok, Reddit (RDDT.N), opens new tab, and the image-sharing platform Imgur, focusing on how they protect children's personal data.

Social media platforms utilize intricate algorithms designed to prioritize content and enhance user engagement. However, their tendency to promote similar material raises concerns about children being exposed to increasingly harmful content.

The ICO is specifically examining how TikTok, owned by Chinese tech giant ByteDance, processes the personal data of users aged 13 to 17 to curate content for their feeds. Additionally, the investigation includes Reddit and Imgur, scrutinizing the methods they employ to determine the age of their younger users.

"If we find there is sufficient evidence that any of these companies have broken the law, we will put this to them and obtain their representations before reaching a final conclusion," the ICO stated.

In 2023, TikTok faced a £12.7 million ($16 million) fine from the ICO for violating data protection laws by collecting personal information from children under 13 without parental consent.

A Reddit spokesperson told Reuters via email that the company has been collaborating with the ICO and remains committed to adhering to regulations in all regions where it operates. "Most of our users are adults, but we have plans to roll out changes this year that address updates to UK regulations around age assurance," the spokesperson said.

ByteDance, TikTok, and Imgur have yet to respond to Reuters' request for comment.

The UK has introduced stricter laws requiring social media companies to implement measures that prevent children from encountering harmful and age-inappropriate content. These regulations mandate platforms to enforce age restrictions and verification mechanisms. Additionally, under proposed British guidelines introduced last year, major social networks—including Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok—must adjust their algorithms to limit or suppress harmful material to enhance child safety.
